Corrosion Protection Processes and Quality Control for Steel Structures

Corrosion Protection Process for Steel Structures

Corrosion protection processes for steel structures are essential for ensuring that steel structures remain in good condition over the long term. This article provides a detailed overview of the various steps involved in these processes, including surface preparation, priming, coating application, quality control, and final inspection and acceptance.

Surface treatment

Surface preparation is the first step in the corrosion protection process. Its primary purpose is to remove dirt, grease, rust, and other contaminants from the surface of steel structures to improve coating adhesion and corrosion protection. Surface preparation includes the following steps:

Cleaning: Removing grease, dirt, and dust from the surface of steel structures using solvents or detergents.

Degreasing: Removing grease and wax-like substances with an alkaline degreaser to improve coating adhesion.

Rust Removal: Removing rust and other corrosion products from the surface of the steel structure using inorganic or organic acids.

Drying: Wipe the steel structure surface dry with compressed air or a clean cloth to ensure it is completely dry.

The quality requirements for surface preparation are as follows: The treated steel structure surface must be free of grease, rust, and other contaminants, and must remain dry. Common issues include incomplete treatment, residual rust, and inadequate drying; these problems must be resolved through re-treatment or enhanced quality control.

Nowadays, shot blasting machines are used to resolve all of the above issues in a single step. In steel structure fabrication plants with systematic management, the process begins with manual grinding of burrs, weld scars, weld spatter, and weld wire after welding is completed. This is followed by shot blasting, with the surface roughness meeting at least SA2.5 grade according to GB50205-2020, and anti-corrosion coating must be applied within four hours.
