Seven buildings in China designed with ‘bamboo shoots’ in mind
In China, seven buildings were designed with ‘bamboo shoots’ in mind.
1.The 57-metre-high landscape structure ‘The First Shoot in the World’ in Taojiang County, Hunan Province, consists of six curved structures similar to the shell of a bamboo shoot, wrapped in a mesh structure on the outside, with a glass curtain wall on the inside and a viewing platform.
The building has multiple functions, including observation, forest fire prevention, communication and observation. The shape of the building is based on the imagery of ‘spring shoots after rain’, breaking out of the ground and climbing upwards, symbolising strong, progressive and upward development.
2.China Resources Building
Completed and opened in December 2018, China Resources Building, also known as ‘Spring Bamboo Shoots’, is located in the financial headquarters base in Houhai, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. With a height of 392.5 metres and a total gross floor area of approximately 270,000 square metres, it is the third tallest building in Shenzhen.
The streamlined appearance of the tower as ‘spring shoots’ gathering at the tip of the tower from the bottom up symbolises the unlimited vitality of the spring shoots. At the same time, the shape of the outer circle and the inner square, and the radiating symmetry of the layout, is also a reflection of the ‘square and round rules’ in oriental culture.
3.Chengdu Panda Base Observation Tower
Located in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the sightseeing watchtower is 69.8 metres high, and the ‘steel bamboo shoot shell’ presents the shape of small on top and big on the bottom, weighing 1,300 tonnes, and is made of 720 pieces of steel structure arc-shaped components with different shapes.
The building is designed with the concept of ‘spring bamboo shoots breaking through the ground and hibiscus flowers blossoming’, simulating the texture and veins of bamboo shoots, and shaped like ‘spring bamboo shoots breaking through the ground’, which not only echoes the panda's favourite food ‘bamboo shoots’, but is also the most important element of the panda's diet. In order to make it look more upright without breaking the height limit. The ‘shoot tip’ part of the building adopts the idea of ‘sprouting’, which can be controlled to close or open.
4.Ji'an Innovation Building
Located in Jinji Lake Innovation Town, Jinggangshan Economic and Technological Development Zone, Ji'an City, Jiangxi Province, with a total investment of about 300 million yuan, covering an area of 17,300 square metres and a height of 150 metres, Ji'an Innovation Building is not only the highest point within the Jinggangshan Economic and Technological Development Zone, but also the most landmark significance of the building within the region.
The shape of the tower is modelled on the natural form of a spring shoot, symbolising the unlimited vitality of the rising shoots, and signifying aggressiveness, breakthroughs and unlimited growth. The building is laid out in a circular radial symmetrical layout, and the whole building can enjoy 360-degree natural lighting along the glass curtain wall, with a view of the surrounding mountains, rivers, parks, and the multiple views of the innovative town.
5.Science and Technology Talent Centre of Anji ‘Two Mountains’ Future Science and Technology City
Located in Anji County, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, the project consists of a main tower and four multi-storey monoliths, with a sky green corridor connecting the tower and the podium. The building height of the main tower is 199.95 metres, with a total of 38 floors above ground, which will become the tallest building in Anji after completion, symbolising the new height of science and technology and economic development in the Anji area.
The image of the main tower is a combination of real and virtual, like ‘bamboo shoots in full bloom’, symbolising the flourishing development of the bamboo township of Anji. The façade is mainly vertical folding surface to form an upward feeling, the tower as a whole towering upright, full of a sense of the times, sketching out a dynamic rhythm of the city skyline.
6.Linxiang City Regional Tourism Sign Tower
Linxiang City, the whole area tourism logo tower modelling comes from the image of spring shoots, from a distance it looks like spring shoots after the rain broke out of the ground, in the local name ‘bamboo shoots building’. The glass elements interspersed with the building's façade depict layers of peeling bamboo shoots.
The rest of the exterior materials are made of bamboo elements, and the bottom of the building is made of natural rocks in warm colours, creating a scene of bamboo shoots growing in the soil and breaking out of the ground after a rain, which is a perfect reflection of the surrounding greenery.
